A vessel that rides on top of the water at cruising speeds is classified as a planing hull. This design allows the vessel to skim along the surface of the water rather than having the hull submerge significantly like a displacement hull does. When a planing hull reaches a certain speed, its shape and surface area allow it to displace water and gain lift, enabling it to rise out of the water and achieve higher speeds. This is particularly useful for recreational boats, where speed and agility are important factors.

In contrast, a displacement hull is designed to push water aside as it moves, taking on water and thus maintaining a deeper draft, which is more suited for slower speeds and stability rather than high-speed performance. A wave-piercing hull is designed to reduce the impact of waves by slicing through them, but that design is more specific to certain types of vessels, including some high-performance powerboats or ferries, rather than general planing vessels. A catamaran features two parallel hulls and can also have planing capabilities depending on its design, but the classification specifically aligns more closely with the behavior of a planing hull at speed.
